What Does Lyr Feed His Magic Dog?

This post was written by one of my players who plays Lyr, the bard. After reading my They Eat What? post from the group's last adventure, he decided to write the events from Lyr's viewpoint. As it turns out most of the other characters were incorrectly interpreting Lyr's actions as cowardly. However, the bard was in fact, the hero of the battle -- in his own head, at least.

I daresay that Dunkle was a fine scoundrel, and his ability to notice those pesky dungeon traps was almost as good as my own. I casually watched as the heroes gathered outside a door, and I mentally hummed the notes to a new melody I was working on. Seeing the astral plane helped me inspire the music with a certain celestial feeling.

Moments later came a shout, "Mind flayer!" In charged Karn the Protector and Dona the Everbloody. If you were to ever throw these two at a dragon, it would undoubtedly die. Following in their wake, almost as deadly as the mind flayer, strode Dexter the Wizard.

Next to me a massive minotaur named Grull scratched his armpits and shared a frown with me. Now, if you have never encountered a mind flayer before, you may not know what the minotaur and I were thinking. Suffice it to say, the first thing a mind flayer tends to do when it sees you is fry your brains. Thus – and quite logically – the minotaur and I shielded ourselves behind thick rock walls. After a few seconds, we glanced through the doorway.

The room was only a small partitioned sleeping quarters with a couple other doors. As expected, Karn, Dona, and Dunkle were drooling on themselves. The great Wizard Dexter, was steadying himself as he took in the devastation. In the center of the room, a fearsome mind flayer moved towards Dunkle.

As a hero is wont to do, I leapt into the room and summoned forth a fearsome beast: a magical hound of great strength and loyalty named Lido. Lido charged the surprised mind flayer, rending its rubbery flesh with ebony teeth. Injured for the first time, the miserable fiend grabbed Dunkle and fled.

"Come back coward! You will be food for my canine friend!" I taunted the mind flayer as I gave chase. Lido followed the mind flayer through one door, and I rushed through the other door, where I came face to face with it.

Looking into the solid black eyes of a mind flayer is not for the faint of heart. There may have been an attempt to insult the creature's parentage. The nature of such an alien creature makes it difficult to land such an insult.

Luckily, I was saved from such a creative dead end as my loyal hound Lido leapt upon the mind flayer and tore at its flesh. Behind Lido strode Dexter who raised a hand and issued forth an icy blue ray that struck the mind flayer. Behind the wizard appeared Karn and Dona, wiping drool from their chins while clutching their weapons menacingly.

Taking in my previously comatose companions, I could only grin and thank them for joining the fight. They seemed upset, and I can only assume they were embarrassed about drooling all over themselves. Honestly, my companions are great but they can be too serious sometimes.

With a swing from Dona's polearm and another from Karn's glaive, the mind flayer finally collapsed. As the creature died, Dunkle frantically tore rubbery tentacles from his head.

In the aftermath, a lesser person might have gone insane or refused to scout ahead. Not Dunkle. It may have helped that I decided to scout ahead with him for a while after that. I am rather stealthy myself and the buddy system is a good idea.

Incidentally, Lido did nibble on the dead mind flayer.
